Understand, Support, and Help Your Child Thrive
Mon May 5, 2025
Stammering (also known as stuttering) is a speech disorder where the flow of speech is interrupted by involuntary repetitions, prolongations, or blocks of sounds. It’s more common in children aged 2 to 6 years, often when they are learning to form sentences and express themselves.
Good news? In most cases, it’s temporary and part of natural language development. But for some, it may persist and require attention.
Stammering can be caused by a combination of factors, including:
Developmental: Speech and language are still developing.
Genetic: It can run in families.
Neurophysiological: The brain may process speech slightly differently.
Emotional: Stress, pressure, or big life changes can trigger or worsen stammering.
It’s not caused by bad parenting or a lack of intelligence.
You may notice your child:
Repeats sounds: “M-m-m-mummy”
Stretches sounds: “Ssssssnake”
Gets stuck and can’t get a word out
Avoids speaking or shows frustration while speaking
🛑 What NOT to Do as a Parent
❌ Don’t say “slow down” or “speak properly”
❌ Don’t interrupt or finish their sentences
❌ Don’t make them repeat things “correctly”
❌ Don’t label them or compare with others
These can make the child more self-conscious and worsen the stammer.
We offer a dedicated Stammering Course not just for adults, but with parent-friendly modules to help you support your child effectively.
“It’s not about fixing your child – it’s about empowering them to speak with confidence.”
